Was Cole really a Hero?

Although Cole gave his life to defend humanity, was it truly, honestly the right thing to do? The Conduits may not be as large in number as the Humans, but they are still human. Effectively, Cole commits genocide against a race, no matter what he chooses, but when Cole killed all Conduits, he effectively cut off human evoloution, making him more of a hindrance than a help.
